Good God. If the musicale hadn’t started, Nolan would’ve kissed her again. She was sure of it. This afternoon, they had crossed the fine line between friends and lovers. She’d enjoyed every minute of it, but it must not happen again. Not good. They shouldn’t be in a room together. Drawn, attracted— whatever this was going on between them mustn’t continue.
“I’ll stay here in the back in case I get hungry for more desserts,” she whispered to Nolan. In truth, she didn’t want to be in the middle of the crowd. This was her first time to be in a gathering like this and she felt so uncomfortable. Everyone looked to be made out of money. Those who lived on another island flew in on their own seaplanes while Shaw Island residents arrived in BMWs, Benz, and other European-made cars. Just listening to their conversations, Gypsy thought to hide for fear that one of them might ask what she did for a living. Of course she would never trade her store for anything in the world. Still…
“I don’t think women here are interested in eating desserts, Gypsy. Your slice of heaven is safe.”
“Just in case.”
“All right. I’ll hide the plate and get a chair.”
“No. I’m fine here. You can—”
Nolan placed a finger on her lips. “Stay here.”
As soon as Nolan turned left, a chair appeared beside her. She looked up to see whose hand held the back of the chair. “Max,” she whispered his name. “How are you?”
“Good. I thought you might need a chair.”
“Nolan is already getting one.”
“Okay. Gypsy, I’m not one to listen to gossip, but I heard you have a delicate condition.”
Condition? “What do you mean by delicate condition?”
Max smiled. “Oh, shit. You’re not pregnant?”
“No!” She nearly shouted the last word. People turned to look at her. Gypsy forced a smile and pretended to focus her attention on the pianist.
“I knew it. Becky would have told us already if you were. She’s been telling everyone willing to listen about you and Nika.”
Max pointed at the chair. “Do you want to sit?”
“No, thank you. Who told you that I’m pregnant? An ugly puss with a broken nose perhaps?”
Raking his hair, he shook his head. “Damn. That ass has been telling everyone that you’re pregnant.”
“Oh, my God. Why would he say that?”
“From what I heard, it’s Nolan who told him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tells everyone that Nolan’s the father.”
“I’m going to skin him alive.”
“Who?” Nolan came back with two chairs.
“Willy. And possibly you.”
“Why?”
“He’s been telling everyone that Gypsy is pregnant,” Max answered.
“And you, apparently, told him that.”
“He’s a liar.”
Gypsy tugged at Nolan’s sleeve. When he looked at her, she whispered, “Why would he think that I’m pregnant?”
“Told you he’s an ass.”
“I’m sorry, Gypsy. I’ll talk to him.” Max made a move to leave, but Nolan stopped him.
“I’ll take care of Willy, Max.”
“Thank you, man. I wouldn’t want to deal with that ass anyway. All right, I spotted someone who needs a chair. Can I take this with me?”
Nolan nodded.
